Written by James Ross

Description

This article walks you through creating a new goal within a plan. Goals are the specific objectives that make up your strategic plan.

Prerequisites

  • The plan must have at least one Focus Area.

  • A Template Hierarchy must be configured on the plan.

Quick Steps

  • Open the plan from the Plans summary page.

  • Click the Add Goal button next to the search bar.

  • In the Add Goal modal, fill in the fields:

    • Title * — The name of your goal (e.g., "Reduce response time to under 4 hours").

    • Description — Optional. A detailed explanation of the goal.

    • Focus Area * — Select which focus area this goal belongs to. Choose from the dropdown.

    • Template * — Select the goal template. This defines the structure and custom fields for the goal.

    • Start Date — Defaults to today. Change if the goal starts later.

    • Due Date — Defaults to 1 month from today. Set the target completion date.

    • Owner — Select the person responsible for this goal.

  • Choose how to save:

    • Save as Draft — Creates the goal in Draft status. Good for planning.

    • Activate Goal — Creates the goal in Active status. It will appear in dashboards and reports immediately.

  • The goal appears in the tree under its focus area.

Add Goal modal with title, description, focus area, template, dates, and owner fields

Restrictions

  • Title, Focus Area, and Template are required.

  • Owner is required when activating a goal (not required for Draft).

  • You cannot create goals without a Template Hierarchy configured.

Important: The Template dropdown shows goal templates from the plan's Template Hierarchy. If the dropdown is empty, you need to configure the hierarchy first via the Template Hierarchy sidebar tab.
