Plan Principles (Custom Fields)

Adding and managing custom fields on a plan using the Plan Principles sidebar tab.

Written by James Ross

Description

Plan Principles let you add custom fields to a plan — extra data fields beyond the standard title, owner, and group. These fields capture plan-specific information like budget, strategic alignment, risk level, or any other metadata your organisation needs.

Why Use Custom Fields?

Every organisation tracks different things. One might need a "Budget Code" on every plan; another might want a "Strategic Priority" rating. Custom fields let you tailor the plan to your organisation's needs without changing the core product.

Quick Steps

Access Plan Principles

  • Open the plan from the Plans summary page.

  • Expand the right sidebar if it's collapsed (click the ☰ toggle on the right edge).

  • Click the Plan Principles tab in the sidebar.

Add a Custom Field

  • In the Plan Principles panel, click Add New or the + button.

  • Configure the field:

    • Field Name — The label for the field (e.g., "Budget Code").

    • Field Type — The type of input: text, dropdown, date, checkbox, etc.

    • Required — Whether the field must be filled in before the plan can be saved.

  • Click Save to add the field.

Edit or Remove a Custom Field

  • Click on an existing field to edit its properties.

  • Use the Pin to top option to keep important fields visible at the top of the list.

  • Remove a field by clicking the delete icon next to it.

Restrictions

  • Custom fields apply to the plan level, not to individual goals.

  • Field names must be unique within a plan.

  • Only users with edit permissions can manage custom fields.

  • Removing a custom field deletes any data stored in that field.

Important: Custom fields defined here appear on the plan itself. If you need custom fields on goals, those are defined by the goal template in the Template Hierarchy — not here.
