What is a Gateway?

This article gives a basic explanation of what gateways are

Written by Hylet Pistorius

A gateway is a point in a process map where the flow can change direction based on a decision or condition. Similar to a fork in the road, it allows the process to follow different routes. Unlike a normal fork, a gateway can also split the process into multiple paths that run in parallel, enabling activities to occur at the same time OR for the user to choose which path is applicable.

Gateways help visualize how work moves through a process, whether that involves selecting a single path, running several activities simultaneously, or merging multiple paths back into one. They are used to control and manage the flow of a process based on specific rules or conditions.

As a stakeholder or administrator, you can set different types of gateways to demonstrate your unique process. You can add endpoints to gateways and drag and drop activities to reorganise the gateway layout.
