Create, Edit and Delete a Gateway

Add a new gateway, edit an existing gateway and remove a gateway. A gateway gets it's own swimlane.

Add a Gateway

Different methods to add a gateway:

  • Plus icon on the map: Hover over the connector where you want to add the gateway and select the green plus icon:

  • Green action button: Click the add gateway action button found left of the map

  • From the right-hand side diagram content menu: a plus sign appears between activities. Select the one where you want to add the gateway

Two default activities will appear in a gateway consisting of two rows. They can be edited to add a title and details.

Gateways cannot contain decisions.

More activities, process links and events can be added to the gateway:

  1. Unlock the map, drag and drop nodes into the gateway:

    1. Yellow drop zones indicate placement next to existing nodes in the same row.

    2. Purple drop zones indicate the creation of a new row in the gateway.

  2. Use the green plus icon that appear on connector lines when hovering over them to add more nodes to the gateway

  3. From the right-hand side diagram content menu: a plus sign appears between activities in the gateway. Select the one where you want to add another node to the gateway


Gateway Display in Swimlane View

When a gateway is created in Swimlane View, a new swimlane is automatically created for the gateway. This swimlane includes all roles responsible for the activities within the gateway. All activities within a gateway will have roles embedded.


Add/Edit a Label to a Gateway

A gateway label provides a clear description of what occurs at that point in the process, helping users quickly understand the parallel, inclusive or exclusive activities being performed.

Multiple methods to add a gateway label:

  1. Add the label when creating the gateway using the green action button/from the diagram content menu.

  2. Double-click the gateway start node or Press Enter when it is selected.

  3. Right-click, Edit, Select Edit Details

Add the label.

Select Save.


Delete a Gateway

There are multiple methods to remove a gateway and to keep/delete the nodes within.

A. Delete the gateway markers and group but retain all the nodes in the gateway:

Right-click on the gateway start node, select delete.

B. Delete the gateway with all its contained nodes:

Hold in Ctrl on the keyboard and select the gateway start and end nodes, along with all the nodes in the gateway. Press Delete on the keyboard.
