Move Items on the Map Using Drag-and-Drop

You can customize your map by moving items around the screen or by changing the actual order of the steps in your process.

Two Ways to Move Items in an Unlocked map

1. Changing the Layout (Where it sits):

If a map looks cluttered, you can click and drag any item (activities, decisions, or roles) to a new spot on the screen. This only changes the visual "look" of the map.

Adjust swimlanes: You can drag the swimlane divider lines with their roles to adjust how your swimlanes are spaced. Once the map is unlocked, a Move icon will appear just above the swimlane's role(s). Select this to move the swimlane using drag-and-drop. Read more about adding a custom swimlane. A custom layout can be reset to display the system's default map layout.

Alternate Paths can be adjusted up and down or left and right.

2. Changing the Sequence (The step order):

You can drag and drop nodes to change the logical order of your process. For example, if you drag "Step A" and drop it after "Step B," the process flow will officially update to that new sequence.

A coloured patch will indicate the possible landing positions:

  • Green is in the happy path

  • Yellow is in a gateway

  • Blue indicates in a branch

  • Orange indicates the path that leads out of nested decision

The right-hand side diagram content menu locks when the map is unlocked.

Once you are satisfied with the new positions, lock the map again to update the right-hand side diagram content menu.

Note:

  • The connector lines may reposition when the map is locked and refreshed. This is due to the auto-calculations that are done when creating the connector lines. To fix these lines, simply edit the node (activity, decision, event or process link) and change the connector positions.

  • While both Swimlane and Embedded view show the exact same information, switching between them may look different because each view saves its own visual layout.

  • Take note that on a decision: one diamond (Y/N) will always be on the right-hand side (the primary decision path), and the other will be on top or bottom depending on the connector (secondary decision path).

  • Timelines: If you are using the Time and Cost timeline, it will hide itself once nodes and swimlanes have been moved to custom positions (layout). The timeline will be hidden until the map is reset to it's default view.

  • Wait until the end: We recommend doing your final "movements" once the process steps are all created. This ensures the connector lines and auto-calculations work smoothly.

  • When printing or sharing maps that have moved nodes, the maps will reflect it accordingly.

  • If nodes are moved to new positions and the process is duplicated or transferred, the duplicated/ transferred map will reflect it accordingly.

  • The right-hand diagram content menu does not update when the map is unlocked. This enables for faster saving and editing on the map itself. Once the map is locked, the diagram content menu will update. To expand/collapse the menus or the activity cards on the diagram content menu, read these articles:
